A Conceptual Shift: From Garage to Boutique Workspace
What once stood as a utilitarian garage now embodies a sophisticated, multi-functional office space — a testament to Kathrine McDonald Design’s ability to reimagine and redefine spatial potential. The goal was clear: create an environment that eschews conventional business aesthetics in favour of something more tactile, warm, and personal. Through careful material selection and thoughtful spatial zoning, the result is a workspace that is as welcoming as it is functional.
Materiality: The Bold Presence of JSC TMT Taiga
At the heart of this transformation is a striking feature wall that frames the banquette seating and defines the central space. This statement wall is finished with JSC TMT Taiga, a feature-grade thermally modified timber with rich natural texture and distinct butterfly knots that lend a handcrafted, bespoke feel to the design. This rustic charm aligns with the project's custom finishes and thoughtful materiality. While the wall has the appearance of charred wood, the effect was achieved using JSC Scumble® Nightfall — a deep black wood oil that enhances the timber’s natural features. While Nightfall typically creates a deep black finish, in this project, the lighting and material interplay produce a softer, warmer tone that perfectly complements the surrounding natural palette.
The tactile quality of JSC TMT Taiga was a key design consideration, supporting the project’s biophilic inspiration and the client’s love of nature. The earthy richness of the timber is paired with lush greenery, Verde Alpi marble, and deep green mosaic tiles to form a cohesive, nature-inspired material palette. Together, these elements balance natural warmth with refined finishes, grounding the space in natural beauty.
Beyond its visual appeal, JSC TMT Taiga offers essential functional benefits. Its thermally modified properties provide enhanced durability, dimensional stability, and resistance to moisture — crucial for high-use, commercial interiors. Unlike chemically treated timbers, JSC TMT Taiga is non-toxic, using a chemical-free thermal modification process that makes it a sustainable, environmentally conscious choice. This quality makes it especially well-suited for interior applications where health, safety, and air quality are paramount. The result is a visually rich, long-lasting solution for a sophisticated office setting.
Design Language: Flowing Curves & Defined Zones
Curves became a core design motif, softening the space and creating a sense of visual flow. This is seen in the sweeping form of the banquette seating, the subtle arc of the curtain lines, and the curved flooring details. The curves not only add a sense of movement but also act as subtle visual markers for different work zones.
These curves are echoed in the bespoke whisky zone — a sleek, intimate area designed for more relaxed collaboration. Here, clean, colour-blocked cabinetry contrasts with the natural movement of Verde Alpi marble, creating a refined, modern statement. This flowing, multi-functional design approach reinforces the project's overarching goal: to create a space that feels welcoming, human, and inherently functional.
