Cambridge Town House
Tucked into a compact site in the heart of Cambridge, this award-winning home by Christopher Beer Architect challenges conventional ideas of suburban living. Wrapped by a brick perimeter wall and organised around a series of internal courtyards, the design creates a surprising sense of openness, privacy, and connection to outdoor space despite its modest footprint. The project was recognised as HOME Magazine's Home of the Year in 2017.
JSC Rustic Cedar cladding plays an important role in softening the home's robust material mix. Used alongside brick, concrete, and corrugated steel, the Vertical shiplap Cedar introduces warmth, texture, and a crafted quality that balances the more utilitarian elements of the design. The timber helps reinforce the relationship between interior and exterior spaces that defines the home's character.
"We wanted the house to be abstract. It's more about forms, and a composition of materials without the need to have conventional doors and windows." - Christopher Beer
