Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square

Christchurch's newest addition, 2 Cathedral Square, stands as one of the largest buildings in the central city since the devastating earthquakes. Serving as the headquarters for Spark NZ, this landmark structure boasts approximately 10,000m² of floor space and features an illuminated double-skinned façade, resembling a glowing lantern.

The five-story building accommodates Spark New Zealand's local staff, high-end shops, restaurants, bars, and even a rooftop terrace accessible to the public. Following the earthquakes, the telecommunications company had to relocate its workforce to the city's outskirts. This resulted in a scattered business landscape around the central city, which gradually transformed as buildings were demolished and new plots emerged in the "red zone."

The ground floor atrium of 2 Cathedral Square is filled with vibrant shops and restaurants and showcases a captivating spiral staircase that ascends from the ground floor, forming an elegant white ribbon that curls around the atrium before reaching the fifth floor. The building's interior incorporates ample timber elements, including cedar panelling and a suspended timber staircase in the central void, providing warmth and texture.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the energy-efficient façade contributes to the building's 5 Green Star rating. It reduces heat gain, maximises natural light, and utilises eco-friendly materials like FSC® certified timber. The inclusion of cycle parking encourages biking as a transportation option, and chilled beams have been implemented to cool the open-plan office areas, ensuring a comfortable environment. This innovative approach pushes the boundaries of traditional office buildings, creating a pleasant and forward-thinking workspace.

2 Cathedral Square not only supports a large workforce in a safe and sustainable setting, but it also enhances the urban fabric of Christchurch. With its civic spaces and creative elements, the building adds to the revitalization of the city centre, providing its residents with new opportunities to enjoy their vibrant surroundings.
