St Georges Bay Road Home
This Parnell residence, originally designed by acclaimed Group Architect James Hackshaw, is a rare example of New Zealand’s mid-century Modernist heritage, thoughtfully brought into the 21st century through a careful renovation by Mike Olsen. The rework respects the original architectural intent, retaining the home’s defining qualities while updating it for contemporary living.
Externally, Alaskan Yellow Cedar was selected for the cladding, introducing a consistent, light natural tone that aligns with the home’s Modernist language. Its fine, even grain and low colour variation create a calm, cohesive exterior, while its natural durability supports long-term performance.
Coated in a custom light grey JSC Scumble colour, the Alaskan Yellow Cedar retains its natural character while achieving a softened, more settled appearance. The finish keeps the timber visually consistent across the facade, reinforcing the home’s focus on form, proportion, and material clarity.
