Muriwai Home

A Window Facing Home

Above Muriwai Beach, Architecture27 and Best Nest Building Company have shaped a highly personal coastal home around memory, material and view. Designed for a long, narrow site between bush and sea, its upper level extends over the driveway in a defined cantilever. Among its most distinctive details is a bay window set at an unexpected angle, pointing beyond Muriwai towards the owner’s family home in Leigh.

JSC Rustic Cedar, also known as Select Tight Knot Cedar or STK Cedar, was specially ordered for the project following onsite weathering trials. Installed as a ventilated timber rainscreen, it continues across the ceilings, soffits and sliding privacy screens. The Cedar’s light tone and visible knots connect the interior and exterior, sitting alongside exposed steel, metal cladding and broad areas of glazing.

Download the full Project Timber editorial to explore the ideas, materials and personal references behind the home, including a purpose-built garage shaped by the owner’s collection of Valiant Chargers.

“The knots are not a compromise here. They are the whole idea.”
