Reviving Westhaven Marina - Cumaru Decking Enhances Marina Accessibility
Westhaven Marina, a cornerstone of Auckland’s maritime heritage, has undergone significant transformation over the years. From its humble beginnings as a haven for local sailors to its current status as the largest recreational marina in the Southern Hemisphere, Westhaven has continually evolved to meet the needs of its community. The recent Pile Berth Redevelopment project, a two-stage initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility and modernising facilities, represents the latest chapter in the marina’s storied history. As part of this endeavour, the project integrates natural materials, to ensure longevity and blend seamlessly with the marina’s coastal landscape. With a focus on improving pedestrian pathways and increasing green spaces, the project reflects a commitment to both functionality and environmental stewardship.
Project Overview
As part of the broader Pile Berth Redevelopment project, the expansion of the boardwalk and promenade at Westhaven Marina represents a significant enhancement to public infrastructure. Extending the walkway to the marina’s northern edge, where it previously ended abruptly, now provides uninterrupted access for pedestrians to enjoy the waterfront views. “Westhaven Marina is an iconic Auckland destination that is vibrant, accessible, and attracts people to the sea.” says Jeanine McMullien, Eke Panuku, Capital Project Delivery Manager.
Details of the project
With Westhaven Marina’s pontoon berths operating at full capacity, there was a growing demand for new walk aboard berths in Auckland. One of the solutions outlined in the 2013 Westhaven Plan was the Pile Berth Redevelopment project. This project took place in two stages between 2019 and 2023 and entailed:
- Staged redevelopment of the pile moorings to floating berths
- Installing modern new marina berths to help reduce Westhaven Marina’s wait list
- Creating more green space for publicuse a nd increasing access to the waterfront and piers on Westhaven’s northern edge
- Provision of new car parks
Project Details
The selection of Cumaru timber for the boardwalk reflects a commitment to durability and sustainability. With its Class 1 durability rating, FSC 100% certification, and resistance to fungi and insects, Cumaru timber offers unmatched strength and longevity, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas, while ensuring responsible sourcing practices. Its rich reddish-brown hue gracefully maturing to a beautiful grey over time, complements the coastal surroundings, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the marina’s landscape. Cumaru timber embodies the project’s focus on creating enduring and environmentally conscious public spaces.
“Along with the new floating berths, an extension of the public walkway and additional car parks, there is now more green space where people can enjoy getting close to the water.”
