Feature Grade Thermally Modified Timber with Butterfly Knots
Taiga®
Species: Nordic Pine/Pinus Sylvestris - Softwood
Origin: Scandanavian Plantation Forests
Look: Knotty with big beautiful sound butterfly knots, feature-grade timber with expressive grain patterns that add natural character. This is without compromising on quality or stability and provides an architectural detail. Rich, warm brown tones that weather nicely to silver-grey if clear coated.
Best for: Projects seeking a rustic or natural aesthetic, from alpine retreats to contemporary homes wanting authentic texture. Great price point.
Recommended/Suitable Applications: Cladding, Interior Panelling & Ceilings, Soffits, Screens & Battens, and even Saunas
Average Length Spread: 1.8m - 5.1m. Random length spread
Limitations to Consider: 200mm sizing is not available. 18mm finish only for cladding. Not available in concave scalloped weatherboard profiles.

Typically darker colours and light, high-pigment stains make the feature knots less conspicuous. They impart a subtle textural effect but lose the bold colour contrast. Adding the brushed finish adds the brushing effect typically accentuate the knots to be more prominent.
Darker Clearer Grade Thermally Modified Timber
Taxon®
Species: Liriodendron tulipifera - commonly known as Tulipwood (clear grade) - Tulipwood is relatively low density for a hardwood, so installation is not impeded.
Origin: These trees grow exclusively in North America and are widely distributed throughout most of the eastern United States in mixed hardwood forests. It has a relatively low average density, making it a lightweight wood species.
Certification: PEFC Certified at source
Look: Darker, even-grained timber offering sophistication, depth, and tonal variation across boards. Rich chocolate brown tones that weathers to silver-grey if clear coated.
Best for: Bold facades, premium homes, or commercial projects where a striking, timeless appearance is desired.

Lighter Clearer Grade Thermally Modified Timber
Amba®
Species: Samba/Triplochiton scleroxylon (Clear grade) - Hardwood
Origin: Samba is a fast-growing tropical species sourced from sustainably managed forests of Central Africa. It is mainly found in countries like Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria. Samba is a light hardwood with a similar density to Cedar.
Certification: FSC Certified - FSC®-C003608
Look: Minimal knots with a smooth vein-like appearance, refined appearance for sleek and modern architecture. Appearance is similar to Taxon, but is lighter in colour. Golden-brown hues, even and consistent but tonal variation across boards.
Best for: Urban townhouses, medium-density housing, or commercial builds where a clean, modern look is key. Takes stain extremely well.
Recommended/Suitable Applications: Cladding, Interior Panelling & Ceilings, Soffits, Screens & Battens
Average Length Spread: 2.1m - 4.8. Select Lengths
Limitations to Consider: Interior panelling profiles are available in 12mm thickness ex 150 and 100mm nominal widths. Not available in concave scalloped weatherboard profiles.

ThermoPine®
Species: NZ Radiata Pine - Softwood
Origin: The story starts with sustainably grown Radiata Pine (Pinus Radiata) from well-managed plantations across New Zealand. It’s a species trusted for its consistency and versatility, now given even more potential through thermal modification.
Look: The boards are dimensionally stable yet rich with life - offering warm colour, tonal depth, and unique visual variation from board to board. olour varies from lighter caramel to deeper more chocolate tones, colour consistency across boards is usually good.
Best For: Interiors that require low maintenance, stability, and good price point.
Recommended/Suitable Applications: ThermoPine is suited to interior applications only such as panelling, ceilings, and feature battens, offering the natural beauty of timber with greater stability and less moisture movement.

Limitations to Consider: Interior Applications ONLY. Soffits can be considered but consultation with the Technical team is advised. Check compatibility of finish with JSC rep (dressed, brushed, bandsawn with coating type).

Coatings
All JSC TMT species can be paired with water or oil based coatings, including the JSC Coda® Wood Oil range and JSC Scumble® Wood Oil range, offering over 25 colour options for both interior & exterior. The ability to accept darker coatings and stains (both oil and water-based), including black with a significant reduction in dimensional movement. Homeowners and architects can choose to preserve the original tones with colours that are similar to the original timber colour or embrace natural weathering over time with clear coating options.
